World Service's "iconic" red door will close to diners in August

A fine dining restaurant is to close its doors after 24 years serving Nottingham.

World Service in Castle Gate will shut on 3 August, on the anniversary of its opening.

The decision was taken due to changes in people's dining habits and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis, said co-owner Dan Lindsay.

Mr Lindsay told the BBC it had been "bittersweet" after seeing the outpouring of memories from customers in response to the news.

He said: "We've had a very good run but the market has changed in what people want for dining out.

"Fine dining is not as popular as it used to be. There's a lot of choice, with a big range of restaurants, but a smaller pool of people looking to go out at the moment.

"The cost of living is very real for people. We're not immune to cost increases, too.

"It's not easy for anyone I think."

Since announcing the closure in seven weeks' time, Mr Lindsay said lots of people had been in touch to express their sadness.

The restaurant statement said the business "would like nothing more than to welcome you through our iconic red doorway one last time" - something plenty of customers have already done.

Mr Lindsay added: "World Service has been an institution, we've been part of lots of people's special memories over the years, people have had birthdays, weddings, everybody's grown up with us.

"The reaction has surprised us if I'm being honest. It was a big decision to close it after such a long time, it's hard knowing there's so much love for it.

"We're busier than ever now with lots of bookings, people wanting to have a final meal here.

"It's been bittersweet."
