A man has been arrested after a woman died in a two-car crash.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the woman's Nissan collided with a Mercedes which was "travelling on the opposing carriageway" on St Helens Road in Bolton at 19:00 GMT on Saturday.

GMP added that the woman, in her 60s, died "from her injuries" while the Nissan driver suffered serious injuries. The Mercedes driver also needed hospital treatment.

The force said a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Det Con Aarron Cramer said: "This is a tragic incident where someone has lost their life and we are supporting the families of those involved at this sad time."

Officers have appealed for any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage.
