A motorist rescued after his car went into water was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, police have said.

Police said witnesses reported seeing a car go into water in Littleport, Cambridgeshire, on Friday.

Two members of the public released the driver before officers arrived.

The man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and released on bail, Cambridgeshire Police said.

"We were called to Westmoor Drove in Littleport on Friday afternoon after witnesses reported this vehicle go into the water," police said in a Facebook post, external.

"The driver, a man in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been bailed to return to the police station in September."

The rescuers were praised online.

One person wrote: "Great work from the two people who released him.

"Another example of the positive nature of most humans.

"Hope he is not badly injured."

Last week a 35-year-old man died after the car he was driving entered a Cambridgeshire river.

Police said a red Mercedes C220 came off the Forty Foot Bank road near Chatteris, and went into the Forty Foot Drain river on Thursday.
