A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a woman in her 30s.
Police were called to Appledore Close in Greenside, Gateshead, at about 22:10 BST on Monday after receiving reports of a disturbance.
Northumbria Police said officers found the victim with serious injuries believed to have been caused by an assault and she died a short time later.
A 38-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody.
A cordon is in place around the property, which contains a number of flats.
Northumbria Police said officers would remain at the scene to carry out inquiries and speak to anyone with concerns.
The force said the victim's next of kin had been informed.
Det Ch Insp Rebecca Fenney said: "Inquiries are at an early stage and we believe that those involved in the incident were known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public."
