A man arrested on suspicion of burglary at a Surrey pub claimed he had got "stuck" in the permises after closing time, police said.

Surrey Police said officers were called to the London Stone pub in Church Street, Staines, shortly before 01:20 BST, after reports of an intruder.

A social media post by the Spelthorne Beat said it appeared the man had activated a crime prevention device which fills a premises with thick fog when triggered.

The force said: "Officers were most surprised to find a male at the window inside the pub asking for help to get out surrounded by smoke."

After checking CCTV, police said the 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

He has been bailed while inquiries continue.
