A £12.6m mental health ward designed specifically for older women with dementia has opened in Kent.

The new Ruby Ward opened at Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust's (KMPT) Hermitage Lane site in Maidstone on Friday.

The 16-bed unit brings an end to "old, outdated" dormitory wards and will provide the "very best care to patients", says the Trust.

A Medway councillor who had been concerned residents would have to travel further for a service previously on their doorstep said the standard of care in the new ward is "brilliant”.

The new site replaces the former Ruby Ward at Medway Maritime Hospital.

KMPT says it now has more space for patients and staff, as well as dedicated spaces for counselling, group therapy, and creative activities.

Patients will have private rooms as well as access to four new gardens and the opportunity to relearn essential skills such as cooking and cleaning.

Shelia Stenson, KMPT chief executive, said: “I am committed to ensuring our buildings are fit for purpose and enable us to provide the very best care to our patients and that is exactly what we have created here.”

Medway Council deputy leader Theresa Murray said she previously had reservations but patients will get a 'superior service'

Medway council deputy leader Theresa Murray, who previously had reservations about the new facility, said there are "good transport links for families, plenty of car parking, and encouragement for car-share schemes".

“And in terms of the standard of the care, it really is brilliant," she added.
