Crews have tackled a fire at a derelict building in Newquay.

People were asked to keep windows and doors closed because of a "large smoke plume", Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said.

The fire, in a building between the former Narrowcliff Hotel and the former Hotel Bristol near Tolcarne beach, was reported at about 16:15 BST on Tuesday.

CFRS said multiple firefighters had battled the flames and a crew would remain at the scene to damp down hot spots. A spokesperson added an investigation into the incident's cause would begin on Wednesday.

The fire service said the incident was scaled back from 20:45

Narrowcliff was closed between Ulalia Road and Hilgrove Road roundabout.

Earlier in the afternoon, staff at the nearby Narrowcliff doctors' surgery asked all non-urgent patients to leave due to the fire.

The fire service said the incident was scaled back from 20:45.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the road closure has since been lifted.
