Police investigating damage to a memorial in memory of those killed in the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel have arrested a man.

Video circulated on social media at the weekend showing a man attacking the Jewish memorial in Palmeira Square in Hove, East Sussex.

Sussex Police was treating it as a hate crime and said a 58-year-old man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of “racially/religiously aggravated criminal damage”.

He remained in police custody on Monday afternoon, a force spokesperson said.

Det Supt Ben Newman said: “We understand that this incident has caused great upset within many communities, and we would like to reassure the public that our investigation team is working hard to gather all the facts and bring this matter to a positive conclusion.”
