Ammunition and a large amount of Class A drugs were also discovered when officers searched a flat in Smithdown Road, Wavertree, on Saturday night.
Merseyside Police said a 29-year-old man was arrested.
Det Ch Insp Andy McCourt said the force was "committed to tackling those involved in serious organised crime, particularly those involved in gun crime".
He added: "This is a significant recovery of an extremely dangerous weapon and as a result our streets are safer today."
