Jobs at Aston Martin could be at risk over US tariffs and weak demand in China, the company has warned.

The luxury carmaker employs up to 700 people at its St Athan manufacturing plant in the Vale of Glamorgan.

In a statement, Aston Martin said any impact on jobs would involve "appropriate consultation" with unions.

The Unite union and the Welsh government have been asked to comment.

In 2018 Aston Martin announced it would build the world's first zero-emissions luxury vehicle at the former RAF base.

The group has seen shares come under pressure this year over concerns about the impact of US President Donald Trump's tariff war.

In a statement, Aston Martin told BBC Wales it was "taking further steps to strengthen its overall position in response to continued challenges in the global macro-economic environment, including the sustained impact of US tariffs and weak demand in China".

It said the actions it was taking "may affect contractor, fixed-term and permanent roles, subject to appropriate consultation with union representatives".

Last month the carmaker said it had launched an immediate review of costs and faced losing £110m due to the "global macroeconomic environment".

The latest speculation about job losses follows a decision in February to cut 170 roles.
