Police seized a Porsche outside a prison and gave the driver directions to the nearest bus and train stations.
The white vehicle was seized on Thursday outside HMP Frankland, near Durham, as the driver was picking up a released prisoner.
Durham Police said officers stopped the vehicle near the gates of the high-security men's jail and discovered it was uninsured.
The force said uninsured vehicles added an estimated "minimum of £53" to every single motor insurance policy.
