A video showing a man assaulting traffic wardens is a "shocking" example of the extent of abuse staff face, a councillor has said.

The bodycam footage caught a man, in his 40s, verbally and physically abusing two wardens after he received a parking ticket in Nuffield Road, Coventry in June 2023.

Coventry City Council said abuse towards their staff was on the rise.

Deputy leader Abdul Salam Khan, said there was "no excuse" for the treatment some workers have faced.

Footage of the incident was passed on to Warwickshire Police, and the man was later arrested, before being convicted of assault in October 2023.

Mr Khan, said the footage had been released in a bid to reduce the number of cases of staff being abused.

"We know many residents appreciate the work of council officers, but as this footage shows, there are a small minority who take it too far," he said.

“There is no excuse for abuse and if you assault our staff, we will inform the police and we will push for a prosecution."

A police spokesperson said: "Incidents like this are completely unacceptable and we continue to work with our local authority partners to take action wherever and whenever we receive information about this."
