The 86-year-old driver of a car died at the scene, police said

A man has died and two people have been injured in a three-vehicle crash on a major route.

The 86-year-old car driver died at the scene of the collision on the A66 near Bowes, County Durham, on Tuesday morning.

A seriously injured van driver was airlifted to hospital, while an HGV driver suffered minor injuries, Durham Police said.

A 15-mile (24km) stretch of the road was closed westbound between the A1(M) at Scotch Corner and the A67 at Bowes until just before midnight.
