Police said they feared someone would get "seriously hurt"

A police force has issued a warning after a spike in reports of children climbing on roofs in a town centre.

Cumbria Constabulary said it had received an increasing number of calls in recent weeks about young people climbing up scaffolding in Whitehaven.

"We understand some kids like to climb but it's getting out of hand and someone is going to get seriously hurt," a spokesman for the force said.

It is urging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of climbing on properties.

"The last thing we want is to be knocking at your door to tell you your son or daughter has been seriously injured after falling from a height," the spokesman added.
