Parkrun volunteer hopes to inspire others to help

Saesha Chohan hopes more young people will volunteer at the Parkrun in Jersey

A Jersey Parkrun volunteer has said it would be great if more young people volunteered at the community event.

Hundreds of people run the 5km (3.2mile) course at Les Quennevais every Saturday morning.

Saesha Chohan, 17, started volunteering at the free community event last year as part of her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and has now helped more than 60 times.

She said: "I think it's great for young people to get out and help the community."

Saesha has been shortlisted for the BBC Radio Jersey Make a Difference Awards. The winner is due to be announced on Friday.

The 17-year-old said she was shocked to receive the nomination, but added "it's nice to see that I've been able to make an impact".

She added "the people are so amazing" at Jersey Parkrun and volunteering at the event at Les Quennevais was "a great start to the weekend".

Michael Chaytor, director at Jersey Parkrun, said Saesha was an "invaluable member of the team" and she showed other youngsters volunteering was "enjoyable"..

He said: "When she was first coming here, it was in the rain and cold weather but she'd be here every week doing it and she’s been fantastic."
