A £21m multiplex cinema featuring one of the largest IMAX screens in north-west England has changed hands just over a year since it opened.

Accompanied by a themed diner, the Backlot Cinema - which opened on 22 March 2024 - was built as part of the second phase of the Houndshill Shopping Centre in Blackpool.

Independent chain Arc Cinemas will take over the attraction on Friday, according to Backlot director John Sullivan.

Blackpool had been without a mainstream cinema since the Odeon on Rigby Road closed in June 2023.

Backlot built with the support of £5m from the government's Getting Building Fund.

The balance came from council borrowing, plus a further £6m investment in the fit-out of the building, including the IMAX screen.

Mr Sullivan said: "The Backlot has been a six-year labour of love and I'm proud of the vibrant community hub we've built.

"Despite industry challenges, our team created something unique for Blackpool, and with Arc Cinemas taking the reins, I'm confident the cinema's future is in great hands."

Blackpool Council said it was working with Arc, which earlier this year opened an eight-screen cinema in Preston's former indoor market area.

Councillor Mark Smith, cabinet member for economy and built environment, said: "The new cinema not only brings more local people into the town centre, but it also supports other businesses and jobs in Blackpool."
