Northumbria Police have arrested a man in his 50s

A police officer has been stabbed after stopping a vehicle.

Northumbria Police said a "vehicle of interest" was spotted in the Leam Lane area of Gateshead on Thursday at about 15:50 BST.

"After stopping the car, the driver assaulted a male police officer with a bladed article causing an injury to his arm," a force spokesman said.

The driver fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after, police said. A man in his 50s was arrested and remains in custody.

Investigations are continuing into what police have described as an "isolated incident".
