A new 20mph (32kph) zone in Leicester has been recommended for approval by the city council.

The area would cover nine residential streets surrounding Westcotes Drive in Westcotes at a cost of £140,000.

Transport bosses have recommended assistant city mayor councillor Geoff Whittle approve the proposals through an executive decision.

The decision could be called in by councillors for further debate.

The scheme if approved would be realised by April 2025, subject to a traffic order approval.

No objections were received from ward councillors and emergency services.

Transport bosses said they consulted 326 households and received 106 replies.

Of those replies, 88% said they agreed with the proposals.

The roads which would fall under the new speed limit are:

  • Westcotes Drive

  • Melcroft Avenue

  • Portlock Street

  • Minehead Street

  • Dunster Street

  • Dulverton Road

  • Tauton Road

  • Cooden Avenue

  • Braunston Avenue (to the junction of Upperton Rise)

A council officer said approaching the issue on a street by street basis, rather than applying blanket coverage, allowed for greater freedoms in both consultation and considering other forms of traffic calming.
