Pedestrians and cyclists have been warned of disruption as foot and cycle paths on a Grade II listed bridge close for resurfacing.

Work on the west side of Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland is set to run until Wednesday. Resurfacing on the east side will take place from 3 to 5 November.

Users are being advised to use the opposite side of the bridge or the new Keel Crossing instead.

The work will be carried out between 09:30 and 15:30 and the vehicle lane next to the resurfacing will be closed for safety and works access.

Labour-run Sunderland City Council said the last major resurfacing of the crossing's foot paths and cycle ways was in 2002 and vehicle lanes were last resurfaced in 2019.

The work is part of £12m council scheme including works on sections of the A183 Chester and A690 Durham roads, the A1018 St Nazaire Way, the A1231 Washington and Sunderland highways, as well as dozens of residential streets and roads.
