The building of a playpark has been pushed back and its funding reallocated to other projects.

The planned playpark at Frank's Bridge in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, will no longer be built using funds from the government's Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF).

A total of £315,000 had been granted to fund the town's redevelopment, but Westmorland and Furness Council said the park's share of the money would be redistributed.

Councillor John Murray said it was "disappointing the new playpark will not happen as quickly as planned but the council is committed to delivering it".

The council now intends to use Frank's Bridge's share of the money to pay for replacement play equipment at a facility next to Kirkby Stephen Primary School and to replace street furniture in Market Square.

The SPF money was initially allocated to four projects, including the redesign of Silver Street Garden, refurbishment of the visitor centre, and improved street signs.

All SPF projects are required to be completed by 31 March 2025.

Murray, who represents Kirkby Stephen and Tebay, said the council had "an opportunity now to create an even better playpark".

"The funds freed up from this will enhance the existing projects and introduce some new features to deliver a scheme worthy of the town."
