An extensive search operation will continue off the coast of County Donegal for a kayaker who has been missing since Thursday.

The alarm was raised when a man, who is aged in his 50s, failed to return after setting off from Gweedore pier in a kayak on Thursday evening.

A kayak was then later found on Friday night.

The Irish coastguard said Monday's operation would concentrate around low water at about 1500 local time and involve boat, drone and shore searches.

Scaled down operation

The R118 coastguard helicopter from Sligo would also be helping with the operation.

The UK Coastguard told BBC News NI that they were stood down from searches on Friday.

A spokesperson for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said crews at their lifeboat stations in Arranmore and Lough Swilly had not been tasked to help with the search being carried out on Monday.

Arranmore RNLI had been requested to launch on both Saturday and Sunday.
