A retraining and recycling charity has welcomed the Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey as its new patron.

Giving Opportunities (GO) said it was "really pleased" Lt Gen Richard Cripwell agreed to take up the post.

The charity said it marked the occasion on Thursday with an official opening ceremony at its new shop and training facility at South Side.

Gen Cripwell said he was "delighted and honoured" to take up the role with a charity which helped "disadvantaged people" across the island.

The charity focuses on providing training and support to people, helping them gain the skills they need to get into work.

"I think it's a fantastic organisation," Gen Cripwell said.

"The work they undertake in the community to develop the skills and confidence of individuals to find fulfilling employment is to be greatly admired and something I strongly support."

Gen Cripwell said Guernsey was an inclusive society and the organisation gave everybody a chance to "play their part".

"I think it's entirely in the character of Guernsey to support such activities and we're a better and stronger society for doing so," he said.

Chairman of GO’s board of directors, Paul Meader said the charity was "really pleased to welcome his excellency".

General manager of GO Chris Murphy said Gen Cripwell understood exactly what the organisation aimed to achieve.

"We're absolutely thrilled that he supports us," he said.
