U-Boat museum revamp approved by council

Plans to refurbish a U-Boat-themed museum have been given a final sign-off.
Wirral Council has approved the project to completely transform the U-Boat Story Museum in Birkenhead.
The scheme is being funded by part of a £19.6 million levelling-up grant and will look to introduce a new green space, improve the Woodside ferry terminal, and create a new international Battle of the Atlantic attraction.
It is hoped work will get started by early summer.
'Positive contribution'
The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the new museum was expected to open some time in August 2025 but will fully launch once £21 million plans to improve the wider area are complete.
The single storey museum will be replaced with a new three-storey building.
Council officers said it “would make a positive contribution" to the area's character "while conserving the significance and setting” of the Woodside Ferry Terminal.
The new museum will take people through different levels to see its U-boat, including from underneath where viewers can see the damage left after it was sunk during World War Two.
A 3D scan of the entire U-boat takes people right inside the wreck.
A new addition will be a US Grumman TBF Avenger bomber which fought U-Boats.
It is hoped the new museum will be one of the first projects delivered with the regeneration funding.
