Bradford senior homes plan could get public cash

Public cash to help fund plans to build more than 50 senior living apartments in Bradford could be signed off next week.

The scheme, which the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) is making a contribution towards, would see a derelict site on Bradford Road in Idle being developed.

A WYCA report said the apartments were needed to help cater for a huge rise in the number of elderly people living in Bradford.

Councillors will be asked to sign off WYCA's proposed contribution of just over £340,000 at a meeting next week.

The overall scheme, however, would cost £10m and would be mainly funded by the private sector.

The report said that the plans would develop 0.4 hectares of brownfield land and develop 51 specialist senior living apartments on the former Blakehill Works in Idle.

It added that the scheme would comprise 36 one-bed apartments, plus 15-two bed properties and 20 car parking spaces.

"Communal gardens, a residents' lounge and a patio terrace will be included," the report added.

There was a 28% increase in the number of elderly residents in Bradford between 2001 and 2019, according to WYCA statistics.
