A man was seriously injured when he crashed a car into a lamppost during a police pursuit.

The 24-year-old was fleeing from officers along Middlesbrough's Normanby Road when the crash happened shortly before midnight on Saturday, Cleveland Police said.

The driver and his 16-year-old passenger were taken to the town's James Cook University Hospital after the crash.

The force said it had made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

A police spokeswoman said the driver remained in hospital with serious injuries.

The 16-year-old boy suffered neck and back pain, but has been discharged from hospital.
