New library opens in former school building

A library has opened in a Grade II listed building once used as a school.
The former Old Polehampton Boys School, in Twyford, Berkshire, has been leased to the council by Polehampton Trust after sitting empty for many years.
The library space has high ceilings, large windows, a specially-designed children's area and an extension which offers an accessible entrance and additional space.
Chairman of Twyford Parish Council Martin Alder said it would provide the community "with the type of first-class resource that it deserves".
The council said it and its contractors had worked closely with the local heritage officer to ensure the work was sympathetic to the building's heritage, while installing modern elements including underfloor heating and a lift.
Mr Alder said: “The opening of our wonderful new library is a fantastic achievement for those, past and present, who have worked diligently towards this goal for so many years."
Leader of the council Stephen Conway said: “Local libraries offer so much more for people than just books. They offer a lifeline for the community, and especially for those who might be struggling or feeling isolated.
“Libraries really are at the heart of their communities and I’m proud that we’ve been able to deliver this fantastic new facility for Twyford and bring this important local landmark back to life.
"This project has been a real labour of love for all involved."
