A new library being housed in a historic Grade II listed building is set to open in the spring.

The venue in the Old Polehampton Boys school in Twyford, Berkshire, will offer reading and study space as well as a specially designed children's area and spaces for activities and events.

While the exact opening date is yet to be confirmed, Wokingham Borough Council said construction work would be completed around Easter.

Council leader Stephen Conway said the library was "really beginning to take shape" and, once completed, would be a "wonderful space".

Over recent months, the building has had new electrics, plumbing and underfloor heating installed, as well as an extension with an accessible entrance.

The original windows have also been restored and the roof has been refurbished to ensure the building retains its historic feel, the council said.

Mr Conway said he could not "wait to share the library with people when it opens".

"It's turning a new page for Twyford and I hope it will encourage people to come along and find out more about what we offer," he said.

Once building work has been completed the building will be handed back to allow for the installation of furniture and IT services.

The current library will also be closed so the contents can be boxed up and moved to the new venue, the council said.

It added dates for the closure of the old library, and the opening of the new one, will be confirmed in the spring.
