Road closures warning ahead of Wolverhampton Pride

A number of road closures have been announced as Wolverhampton prepares for its Pride celebrations.

The event takes place on 8 June at Old Market Square and will feature headliners Denise Van Outen and Duncan James.

Trixie Lee, rapper Nate Ethan, Jaymi Hensley, Lee Anthony, Fatt Projects and tribute act Abba Gems are also set to perform.

A number of activities will also take place across the city throughout the weekend, the city council said.

From midnight on 5 June until 23:59 BST on 10 June, Market Square Road will be closed for the build of the Pride Plaza.

There will also be no pedestrian access on Old Market Square during this time.

On 8 June, from 06:00 BST until 23:59 BST, School Street will become a no through road but there will still be access to the back of businesses through School Street.

There will also be access to Fold Street Car Park, the council says - and the exit from Fold Street will be between Idea Shop and Istanbul Restaurant.

From 08:30 BST on 8 June until 06:00 BST on 9 June, Victoria Street will be closed.

During the parade from 12:00 BST to 14:00 BST, a rolling road closure will be in place for the route of the Pride Parade on the following roads:

  • Princess Street

  • Lichfield Street

  • Darlington Street

  • Berry Street

  • Queen Street

  • Victoria Street

School Street and Bell Street car parks will also be shut on the 8 June while Market car park will be closed from 6 June until 9 June, the authority said.

This year's event sees the introduction of the Pride Village, taking place on Victoria Street.

The area will be free to attend, the council says, and will host the Pride Village market, the University of Wolverhampton Village Stage and will be the starting point for the Pride Parade.

Pride Afterglow will be at Pride House on Skinner Street where a number of activities will be hosted including yoga, needlecraft, a quiz and a board game group.

From 7 to 9 June there will be a range of Pride-focused events across the city, including a book club at Central Library, parties at The White Hart, a dance area at Gorgeous Nightclub and workshops at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the council says.
