For many voters, polling day involves a trip to their local community centre, school or church.

But for some Gloucestershire residents, marking an X on their ballot papers will see them travel to more unorthodox locations.

From a sports bar to a country estate famed for its snowdrops in winter, there is a lot of variety when it comes to polling station venues.

Head instructor at Kenbu Dojo in Gloucester, Sinéad Byrne, said the karate club's Montpellier Hall is being used on Thursday so they have had to cancel classes.

"It's a busy day here on a Thursday, usually," said Ms Byrne, who is is eight times world champion.

"There's a lot of coming and going, a lot of different activities going on."

"So, we're going to cancel our regular classes and we're going to have a fun day in the park," added Ms Byrne who has been training in martial arts for 23 years.

The Lion's Den's bar at Gloucester Rugby's Kingsholm Stadium is another unusual polling station in the county.

Once serving as the changing rooms, this bar dates back to 1905 when it was used as a gymnasium.

Meanwhile, temporary buildings are being erected at three locations - Imperial Square, and Sandford Lido in Cheltenham, and Holborn Farm in The Leigh - so they can used on general election day.

The estate office at the Colesbourne Estate, famed for its 350 varieties of stunning snowdrops in the winter months, will welcome electors on Thursday, too.

It is based in the heart of the Cotswolds, and comprises 2,500 acres including two farms, 900 acres of forestry and a number of properties in the village.

Votes can also be cast at Cheltenham East Fire Station, and Bingham House and Gallery in Cirencester, which displays art relating to the historic capital of the Cotswolds and its people.

Polling stations are open from 07:00 BST until 22:00 on Thursday 4 July.

Those voting in person give their name and address to staff inside the polling station upon their arrival, and will need to show photo ID.

They will then be given a ballot paper containing a list of candidates and their parties, with instructions provided on notices in the polling booth and on the top of the ballot paper.

Residents should use their nearest polling station - you can check locations on your local authority's website or click here, external.
