A burglar who targeted the homes of elderly women living alone has been jailed.
Aaron Winzar, 36, would approach his victims under the guise of a legitimate plumbing appointment, according to Wiltshire Police.
He would then distract them while he carried out a "quick but systematic search for cash", crime investigator Bianca Ledbury said. His victims were women aged between 82 and 90.
Winzar, of Gresham Road, Bournemouth, was sentenced to four years and eight months at Winchester Crown Court on Thursday for four burglaries and one attempted burglary in Salisbury.
Ms Ledbury said while Winzar was able to enter one victim's home because he had worked for a legitimate company, he lied to the rest of his victims and rehearsed reasons for his arrival.
"Once he has gained their trust, he would ask the victim to check another part of the property," Ms Ledbury added.
She said he left swiftly after retrieving money, with his victims initially unaware they had been burgled.
Ms Ledbury said Winzar had "never shown remorse" or "admitted responsibility for his "distressing crimes".
"Winzar has previously claimed to me that he is a 'changed man', yet he went on to commit other burglaries shortly afterwards. Judge Parker described his planned dishonesty as 'entirely selfish, cynical and bordering on cruel' and I agree with him," she added.
She also highlighted the long-lasting impact of burglary on victims.
"While no-one was physically injured in these incidents, both victims continue to experience the emotional and psychological consequences of his actions," she said.
The court was told how the victims felt embarrassed or ashamed following the burglaries.
Ms Ledbury encouraged anyone having maintenance and renovation work done to thoroughly research companies and individuals.
"Always ask for identification and do not allow them inside until their identity and purpose have been fully verified, and make use of online services such as Check a Trade," she added.
