A wartime bunker could become a museum helping educate people about the German Occupation of Jersey.

The Ports of Jersey (PoJ) said it had accepted a proposal from Jersey War Tours and Jersey Seafaris to run St Catherine's bunker.

The proposal was accepted after businesses were invited to express an interest in running the site.

It had previously been operated by Jersey Turbot Farm for many years.

'Achievable plan'

Located at St Catherine's Breakwater, the bunker was a German stronghold, with two heavy machine-gun bunkers.

It also has shelters, anti-tank defences and a tunnel.

PoJ said the creation of a museum at the site would be an "educational experience" for tourists and "showcase the rich cultural heritage of the area".

Kim Gilbraith, from PoJ, said she looked forward to working with businesses to develop their plans.

"Their combined proposal will make the site accessible to all and incorporate the area into a bigger 'land to sea' historical tour," she said.

"St Catherine's war tunnels hold a profound historical significance, and we felt that this proposal demonstrated a clear and achievable plan that fits in well with the area."
