Airfield to close for emergency response exercise

Guernsey airfield will be closed on Sunday morning as authorities carry our an emergency response exercise.

Guernsey Ports are working with the emergency services to test their response to an incident involving an aircraft.

The exercise, named Operation Jackdaw, will take place between 07:00 (GMT) and 10:00.

The airfield will be closed during this time but the terminal will remain open for passengers flying later that morning.

'Public safety is our highest priority'

The operation will involve all emergency services, Aurigny airline and airport staff, Princess Elizabeth Hospital, and Civil Protection volunteers.

Colin Le Ray, managing director of Guernsey Ports, said: “This exercise is designed to put our emergency policies and procedures to the test and assess the island’s response to a major incident involving an aircraft.

“Thankfully, emergency incidents involving aircraft are rare, but they can happen and this simulation is designed to test our preparedness for such a situation.

"Public safety is our highest priority and this exercise will help inform Guernsey Ports’ emergency planning."

Mr Le Ray asked neighbours of Guernsey Airport for their "patience and understanding” as there may be increased noise and activity coming from the area.
