Eight people rescued from fire in block of flats

Eight people have been rescued from a fire in a block of flats in West Sussex.

The blaze broke out shortly before 02:00 GMT at the flats on St Cuthmans Road in Steyning, West Sussex Fire & Rescue said.

A spokesperson said the ground and first floor of the building were "significantly affected".

Four fire engines were sent to the scene but none of those rescued were thought to be seriously injured.

Crews used ladders at the front and back of the block to evacuate those inside.

An ambulance and paramedics were also called.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said those rescued were treated at the scene, before being given further checks in hospital.

Fire crews had left the scene by 04:20 GMT.
