An underpass that has been closed off for nine months is due to reopen.

The passageway in Ipswich, Suffolk, allows pedestrians to move safely underneath the roundabout at St Matthew's Street and Civic Drive.

However a section outside the nearby Tesco Express on the roundabout was closed off after parts of a power station were moved through the area and a barrier was removed to allow for this.

Suffolk County Council has said movable barriers will be reinstalled in mid-July before the section is reopened.

"Prior to previous abnormal load moves through Suffolk, particularly Ipswich, many highway assets were upgraded to be removable to support future abnormal load moves and limit disruption on the road network," a spokesperson for the council said.

"The subway railings have been refabricated and designed to be moveable which has taken time; however, the barriers are due to be reinstalled mid-July, following approvals."

The spokesperson added the works would be undertaken overnight to minimise disruption.

The closure has led to pedestrians attempted to negotiate the busy road without a crossing.
