A child sustained a "significant" injury after a dog entered a play park and bit off their fingertip.
The animal was unaccompanied by its owner when it entered the park on Priscott Way in Newton Abbot, Devon, on 23 July at about 08:30 BST.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the child was eating a biscuit when the dog attacked them, causing "significant injuries". The dog, which is described as being of medium size and dark in colour, then left the area.
Police said it is believed the dog's owner lives locally and is possibly unaware of the incident.
Officers are conducting house-to-house enquiries and hunting through CCTV to identify the owner.
