A man has been cleared of causing the death of another man in a city centre.

Gamal Nasrallah Hassan, 60, died in hospital on 4 August 2023, two days after an incident in Legg Street in Chelmsford.

Police had been called just before 21:15 BST and at the time they said Mr Hassan was assaulted.

Kimarley Anthony, 22, of Fox Crescent in the city, was charged with manslaughter almost a year later, but on Tuesday he was found not guilty following a nine-day trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Jurors gave a unanimous verdict after deliberating for about one hour and 25 minutes.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman said: "Having carefully reviewed the material provided in this case, we concluded that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute a charge of manslaughter and that it was in the public interest to do so.

"The court has returned its verdict, and we respect that decision.

"Our thoughts remain with the family of Gamal Nasrallah Hassan Khalil."

Essex Police says it has been supporting the family of the deceased. The force declined to comment following the conclusion of the trial.
