A man has been arrested and bailed over the alleged abuse of workers who were removing a flag from a lamppost.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said the 35-year-old, from Maidenhead, was arrested on suspicion of a racially or religiously aggravated public order offence and has since been released on bail.

Contractors working for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead were filmed removing a union flag when they were approached by a member of the public.

"While the matter of flags is primarily for the local authority, we will investigate any unlawful behaviour directed at workers carrying out their duties," the TVP spokesperson said.

"We would like to reassure the public that appropriate measures are being taken."
