A 23-year-old man who died on Monday in Bradford was "beaten and stabbed" by a group of men after being chased.
Luqman Ishfaq was found dead on Barlow Street, in the Barkerend area of the city, with stab wounds after an "incident of violent disorder" at around 22:29 BST on 21 October.
West Yorkshire Police said Mr Ishfaq was one of four people who fled a VW Golf involved in the disorder and were chased by a group armed with weapons.
His family described him as "a kind-hearted and loyal man" and that they are "all truly devastated that he has been so cruelly taken from us".
The suspects then fled the scene but four vehicles were recovered for forensic examination.
No arrests have been made yet.
In a statement released through the police, the family of Mr Ishfaq said: "Luqman was a much-loved son, brother and friend to so many.
"He was a kind-hearted and loyal man, and the pain we feel from this loss is immeasurable.
"As a family we are all truly devastated that he has been so cruelly taken from us."
Mr Ishfaq's cousin Adil Afzal told the BBC: "I knew Luqman my entire life; we grew up together.
"From primary school to secondary, through college, and as cousins, we shared countless moments and memories.
"Over the years, I came to see him not just as family but as someone who helped me through my most difficult times.
"His support during my struggles with mental health was invaluable.
"Luqman was always there with a kind word, a listening ear, and unwavering patience."
Meanwhile, Tracey Everson, who taught Mr Ishfaq when he was a student at Laisterdyke Leadership Academy, said: "He was a lovely person, kind hearted and a little joker.
"He will be sadly missed. I cannot believe what has happened to him."
Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Stacey Atkinson said: "This is a serious and appalling crime in which Mr Ishfaq was chased and set upon by a group of males in the street.
"We are carrying out extensive enquiries including house to house, CCTV and forensics.
"Whilst the motive remains unclear we believe there had been some sort of dispute prior to this incident.
"There were a number of people in the area who witnessed this incident and who were involved.
"I would directly appeal to those who were involved in any part of the disorder to come forward to the police.
"His family are truly devastated by this and are being supported by specially trained officers.
"We are working with the local neighbourhood policing team and patrols have been stepped up in the area to provide reassurance.
"Violence has no place on our streets, and we will not hesitate to send a strong message to get the people involved charged and before the courts."
