School pupils have named five gritter wagons being used to keep roads clear of snow and ice during the festive period.

Bradford Council involved schools from each of the five parliamentary constituencies in the district to get them to think of creative names for five of their 24 vehicles.

Some of the names have included Clearopathra, a reference to the ancient Egyptian Queen, chosen by pupils at Thackley Primary School, in Bradford East, while pupils at Dixons Music Primary School, in Bradford West, went for Glittery Ice Machine.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw thanked the children for their imaginative ideas for the gritters.

"I hope they've enjoyed taking part and finding out about our gritting operation," he said.

Ross-Shaw added that if the children see a gritter they have named he hoped they gave the driver "a wave".

"They really do work hard, often working around the clock or sacrificing time with their loved ones, to ensure that our roads are gritted."

The vehicles grit more than 700 miles (1,126km) of roads between them.

Pupils at each of the schools also got to see the gritter wagons when the council's Highways staff brought them to their car parks.

Pupils at Co-Op Academy Southfield, the school representing Bradford South, the name chosen was Wuthering Ice.

A nod to the area's cultural heritage, as it references Emily Bronte's classic novel Wuthering Heights, which is set on the Haworth moors.

Meanwhile, the children at Burley and Woodhead C of E Primary School, which was representing the Shipley constituency, opted for the name Grittle Mix, after being inspired the pop group Little Mix.

And Steeton Primary School, representing the Keighley and Ilkley constituency, were inspired by the children's classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and so selected the name Gritty Gritty Bang Bang.
