A man has been arrested on suspicion of carrying an air rifle after he was seen with what was believed to be a weapon inside a bag near York Minster.

Firearms officers were sent to Duncombe Place after North Yorkshire Police received reports of man with a suspected shotgun in the High Petergate area at 17:50 GMT, a force spokesperson said.

No-one was threatened or harmed and the air rifle remained inside the bag.

The air rifle was seized and the man remains in police custody, the spokesperson said.

He was tracked on CCTV cameras and police detained him in Duncombe Place shortly after 18:00.

Police said it was usual practice to deploy authorised firearms officers following reports of a weapon.
