Fort William's bus station could be relocated to a new site under plans to improve the Lochaber town's transport links.

Moving the station from MacFarlane Way to nearby Nevis Terrace would give buses easier access to the A82 trunk road, according to a new Highland Council report.

The proposal forms part of Fort William 2040, external, a project led by the local authority.

The report to Highland councillors meeting next week said funding had been sought for a study into the feasibility and design costs of the relocation.

The report said a station at Nevis Terrace would mean long-distance coaches and local service buses could operate closer together, and the move would also "significantly improve" bus passengers' experience of arriving in Fort William.

The site is currently a car park.

An application for funding for the study has been submitted to Transport Scotland's new Bus Infrastructure Fund.

Fort William 2040 is a long-term plan to revamp parts of the town and make it easier to travel in and around the community.

Last year, local businesses said traffic congestion had reached "crisis point".
