A 50-year-old man has died after being hit by a car in Newcastle

A man who was hit by a car in the early hours of the morning has died.

Northumbria Police said a vehicle struck a pedestrian at 01.20 BST on the A1058 Coast Road in Newcastle, between the Corner House and Cradlewell.

The 50-year-old man died a short time later, the force added.

A man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in police custody while inquiries are ongoing.

The road was closed for several hours and reopened in both directions before 09:00.
