Police are investigating an illegal rave which saw about 300 people gather at a national park.

Officers were called to Croydon Hill, Exmoor, at about 02:00 BST on 5 October.

Avon and Somerset Police said there had been no impact on local roads and "there was no obvious public safety risk" during the early hours so they monitored the event before returning at about 09:00 to help bring it to a "safe conclusion".

A police spokesperson said: “We must always prioritise the use of our resources based on the threat, harm and risk posed."

Police said when they returned to the remote location the number of people had reduced to about 100 and road closures were put in place to prevent anyone else getting to the event.

The force said it took the matter seriously and would investigate those who organised the event.

“We will also be working with partner agencies to explore ways to prevent further such events occurring," a spokesperson said.

“We continue to encourage members of the public to report any suspicions they have about unauthorised music events that may be about to take place."
