Guernsey Police campaign focuses on road safety

The force said in the past fortnight it had been running a social media campaign on road safety

Guernsey Police have stopped 18 drivers for mobile phone related offences during a road safety campaign.

The fortnight of focus involved running a social media campaign and officers out on patrol proactively looking for road traffic offences.

Of those stopped most were issued with a fixed penalty notice, but repeat offenders were reported to court.

Officers said one of the key priorities had been mobile phone use while driving, because of how much of a contributor it is to crashes that result in serious injuries or death.

A spokesman said: "Nothing on your mobile phone is so urgent that you need to risk people's lives, including your own, to read it.

"As a motorist, you are not the most vulnerable person on the road. Choosing to be distracted and using your mobile phone while driving is a serious offence because it jeopardises the safety of others.

"Be considerate of others and stay alert of your surroundings, to keep everybody safe."
