There have been "no incidents or protest activity" in the county "despite misinformation" on social media, Cambridgeshire Police has confirmed.

Mosques in Peterborough cut back their opening hours amid ongoing unrest around England, which has resulted in convictions for violent disorder.

Supt Robin Sissons, of Cambridgeshire Police, urged people "to continue business as usual, but remain vigilant" and to report anything of concern to the police.

The force has, though, increased the number of patrols in recent days.

'Social media misinformation'

Far-right violence broke out around the country after three girls were fatally stabbed by a 17-year-old in Southport.

About 30,000 Muslims live in Peterborough and community leaders said there were “deep concerns” about being "targeted".

Supt Sissons said: “We understand these national incidents are of concern to our community and as always, we will continue to work hard understanding those concerns and to reassure people.

“We have been engaging with community leaders over recent days and we have increased patrols across the county.

"We remain united in Cambridgeshire, and we are very proud of the rich diversity of our county.

"We encourage everyone to be cautious about what they read on social media.

"We have had no incidents or protest activity in Cambridgeshire, despite misinformation stating the contrary on social media.

"While this remains the case, I would urge people to continue business as usual, but remain vigilant and if you see or hear anything that concerns you then please contact the police."
