Main phase of £3.3m railway station work to begin

The main phase of work to reconstruct two platforms at Chesterfield Railway Station is set to begin on Monday.
Two 40m (131.2ft) sections of platforms one and two will be replaced as part of the £3.3m infrastructure scheme, designed to improve the platforms' structural integrity and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
The station will remain open to passengers and the core work will take place over Christmas to minimise passenger disruption, Network Rail said.
Preparation work took place in August and the project is expected to be completed before the end of March 2026.
The existing platform surface will be removed and new steel crossmembers installed.
Network Rail added the steel superstructure beneath the platforms would be grit-blasted, repaired and repainted before the end of 2025.
Half of the platform areas will be fenced off for a period from October to February to allow work on top of and beneath the surface during daytime working hours.
The project also includes new fencing and lighting to improve security and safety at the station, Network Rail said.
Network Rail added that Crow Lane, which leads to the station, would remain closed until 20 February to maintain a safe working environment for staff.
