Nuclear construction workers on strike over pay

Unite says it represents 1,500 members at the Cumbrian plant

Construction workers employed by contractors at a nuclear site are taking strike action in a dispute over pay.
The Unite members at Sellafield in Cumbria began four days of industrial action on Monday over "the refusal to increase Sellafield-specific allowances", the union said.
According to Unite, which said the industrial action was resulting in "severe disruption", construction workers at other nuclear projects receive pay premiums that contractors at Sellafield do not match.
Sellafield Ltd said it did not directly employ those taking part in the action but "safety and security" would continue to be its priority throughout the strike.
Staff taking part in the action include electricians, joiners, pipe-fitters, riggers, welders and groundworkers.
The union is calling on employers to return to discussions and "recognise the unique hazards and skillsets required" at the Cumbrian facility.
A spokesman for nuclear site said: "We are aware of the ongoing dispute involving contractors working at Sellafield.
"As always, the safety and security of the Sellafield site, our workforce and the local community is our priority during this industrial action."
