Sinfield challenge: Everything you need to know
- Published
A former rugby league player and fundraiser will bring his latest challenge to Hull and East Yorkshire on Thursday.
Kevin Sinfield is running 50km (31 miles) a day for seven days to raise money for six motor neurone disease (MND) charities.
Mr Sinfield will cross Hull's rugby divide, running the first half in the black and white colours of Hull FC before switching to a red and white top - the colours of Hull KR.
The ex-Leeds Rhinos player is fundraising in memory of friend and team-mate Rob Burrow, who died of MND in June.
Day five: The full route and times
07.00 GMT - Beverley Racecourse - start
08.35 - Hull Golf club
09.35 - North Ferriby village Hall
10.35 - Haltemprice Leisure centre
11.35 - Costello Stadium
12.35 - Queen Victoria Sq, Hull
13.40 - Craven Park - finish
Why is Sinfield taking on the challenge?
Sinfield and Burrow were teammates on the pitch and friends off it.
Burrow, who was married with three children, retired from playing in 2017 after winning eight Super League Grand Finals and 15 England and five Great Britain caps.
Burrow spent his entire club career with Leeds and made more than 400 appearances between 2001 and 2017.
He was diagnosed with MND in 2019. Since then, Burrow and Sinfield tirelessly worked to raise both awareness and funds for MND charities, before Burrow's death in June at the age of 41.
The Hull leg of the challenge will also remember former Hull FC player Adam Maher, who died from the disease in 2020.
Australian-born Maher was a second-rower, who made 100 appearances for FC between 2000 and 2003, scoring 25 tries.
What does the challenge involve?
The Running home for Christmas challenge will see Sinfield and the team covering over 50km (31miles) per day, visiting seven regions across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Each day will be broken down into 7km (4.3 mile) blocks, the number seven has been central to Sinfield’s challenge in recognition of Burrow, who wore the number during his career.
The team will aim to complete each 7km within one hour before the next block must start on the hour, meaning the only rest the team will get between each leg is the time spare after they have completed the block.
Which charities is Sinfield fundraising for?
Kevin Sinfield and team are raising money for Motor Neurone Disease Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, MND Scotland and The Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.
How much has Sinfield raised so far?
Sinfield has already raised about £10m over four previous annual challenges.
