An error after the original by-election led to paperwork not being completed in time

An independent candidate has won a re-run town council by-election, which had to take place after an administrative error.

A by-election for the Elworth ward on Sandbach Town Council in August was originally won by Labour's Colin Storey.

But an error afterwards led to the paperwork not being completed in time, meaning the by-election had to be held for a second time.

Independent Helen Merrick won the poll on Thursday, with Reform UK's Will Taylor coming second and Storey finishing third.

Sandbach Town Council said in October that the cost of re-running the by-election was about £15,000.

Writing on social media ahead of the election, Merrick said she decided to stand because she felt none of the candidates represented her.
