A community theatre has reopened following months of renovations, and is now sporting an eye-catching new paint job.

The Kings Theatre in Kings Barton Street is Gloucester's last remaining theatre, but was forced to close in February after an audit exposed safety risks.

After a huge fundraising effort to pay for repairs, the volunteer-run venue reopened this weekend, with its facade reimagined by Gloucester-based mural artist Tash Frootko.

Andrew Taylor, chair of the theatre's board, said the project had been a "huge sacrifice and commitment" and thanked everyone who got involved.

Speaking to BBC Gloucestershire, he said: "When we had to close the doors that was heart-breaking because the one thing we don't want is a dark stage."

Mr Taylor continued: "The Kings Theatre is a very quaint, intimate theatre and it's the last remaining theatre in Gloucester.

"It's a hub for the community, a creative hub, a hub of diversity and it's so important that we keep those creative spaces alive."

He added: "People like myself need that creative outlet and other people who just thrive on being on stage - it's just so important we have a space like that in Gloucester."

The theatre's new brightly painted exterior will be the first thing to catch the eye of many people.

Ms Frootko said: "I live my life in colour - so if I can put colour anywhere, I will.

"The theatre was very plain and magnolia which is a word I don't like to use."

She added: "It was an amazing space because it had so much detail. Now it's got vibrant colours and it's absolutely stand out, so it's ready to roll."

The theatre's opening show is "Electric Dreams" - a journey into the world of synth music.

In a post on social media, the Kings Theatre said: "Now the doors are open, we need your support more than ever, by coming to our shows, bringing your friends and family, and helping us keep this community space thriving."
